Press Release
HOUSTON – May 2, 2008 - Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Paul Bettencourt has released a countywide map based on HCAD’s 2008 pre-protest noticed values showing an average 5.99% increase in residential home values for 2008. Homeowners have until June 2nd to protest the appraised value of their homes, not just April 30th. “Homeowners now actually have two protest deadlines,” said HCAD Chief Appraiser Jim Robinson. “There was an early, April 30 deadline for homestead properties, but a homeowner who missed that deadline and feels there is an error in the market value set by the appraisal district can still file until June 2,” Robinson added. The map of average market values change from 2007 to 2008 by zip code for residential single family homes is posted at www.hctax.net for public review. About 11 zip codes show a decline and the rest have increases of up to 26%. “Even though home values are down in other parts of the county, the HCAD snapshot of 1/1/2008 shows an increase of 5.99% countywide as home sales data in Harris County remained strong through that period,” said Bettencourt. “I urge taxpayers to consider protesting using HCAD iFile and their one of a kind iSettle, if they think their value is too high!” Bettencourt added. Please go online to review the value change map and data by zip code at www.hctax.net. For homeowners protests of appraisal value go directly to www.hcad.org and select the iFile and iSettle options. |
